WALKING TALL

Maly was born with a feet deformity and would have been unable to walk if it was left untreated. Thanks to CCF, she’s now running around like any normal little girl In a bright red tracksuit, Maly is like any other energetic four-year-old tearing around the room. But Maly’s mum does not mind her young daughter’s exuberance; it’s a joy for her to see. Maly was born with deformed feet which curved inwards - like clubfeet - and would have been unable to walk without specialist intervention. Luckily, the family was already under the care of CCF so little Maly received the treatment she needed very early on. When she was just five days old, we ensured that she was assessed at a paediatric hospital and began physiotherapy. At almost two years of age, Maly began to take her first steps. Now aged four, she can walk - a slight dragging of the feet the only hint of any issues - and run with her friends. This month (August), she will undergo a second corrective operation and the long-term prognosis, with continued physiotherapy, is good. Without CCF’s help, the family - Maly is the youngest of six children aged from 23 to four - would have struggled. They rely on the income of the father, a moto driver, who due to illness does not work regularly. While the hospital care is free, CCF covers all the other expenses including transportation, stays in hospital and meals, as well as assisting the family in day-to-day living. Maly and her family also live in one of our World Housing homes and four of her siblings are in CCF’s education program. “Without the help, she would not be able to walk. Now she is like any normal girl,” says her mother, Sophea. “We thank those who have helped us.” Make a Difference We couldn’t do what we do without our supporters. We rely on your generosity to help us fund our programs and make daily differences to children and families living in poverty in Cambodia.
