Srey's story

Living in Poverty
Like many CCF children, Srey Mau did not have the best start in life. One of three children, the family lived in an extremely impoverished community in Steung Meanchey, Phnom Penh.

Srey Mau grew up in a troubled family. Her father struggled with drug and alcohol problems and at times was violent. When her father was sent to a rehabilitation centre, her mother worked as a garbage scavenger on the streets to support her children as best she could, facing a daily battle to survive.

Srey Mau’s mother then found a new partner - eventually marrying and having another child - and moved away, leaving Srey Mau and her two siblings (an older sister and brother) with an aunt in unsafe living conditions.

Transforming Lives
After concerns were raised about the welfare of the children, Cambodian Children’s Fund accepted them into the residential and educational program. With a nurturing environment, Srey Mau flourished and has grown to become a happy and healthy little girl. Now aged six, she attends school and proudly wears the CCF uniform. Srey Mau likes having lots of friends to play with, a safe place to stay, plenty of food and regular schooling.

Sadly, Srey Mau’s father passed away a year ago. While her mother only visits once a year, her aunt and grandmother see Srey Mau and her siblings at CCF at least once a month. CCF will continue to work with Srey Mau’s family to ensure that she has the best care to grow in a loving and stable home.
