Project Name: Building Safe Water Supply Systems
Project Date: August, 2006
In cooperation with the PEPY Ride (www.pepyride.org) and RDI Cambodia (www.rdic.org), a local NGO working to bring clean, drinkable water to the masses, the CCF has undertaken to provide 2 rainwater harvesting units to public schools in the Lvea Aem area, which is located 40 km outside of Phnom Penh.
At this moment, nearly 80% of all deaths in Cambodia come from water borne diseases. It is estimated that 40% of the Cambodian population does not have access to an adequate supply of clean water.
Naturally occurring arsenic in the ground water has caused sickness of epidemic proportions in Cambodia in recent years. This has only recently been discovered and long-term effects are still unknown. Cancer rates are sure to increase rapidly in coming years, and the health care system is grossly unprepared to handle the crisis.
Fresh water is a luxury unknown to most Cambodians, especially those living in remote villages. Most are currently drinking water from ponds, wells and lakes, all of which are grossly contaminated.
RDI informs that the ground water in Lvea Ara has particularly high levels of arsenic. The only water available is pumped from the nearby river, but there is a high population, and a small supply is expected to serve a large demand.
2 tanks at 2 separate schools will be installed in Lvea Aem, each tank holding approximately 30,000 liters of water. Each school currently serves nearly 1000 students on a daily basis.
In addition to building the tanks, the project will provide each child with their own water bottle. Children will be educated on hygiene (washing their hands after using the restroom), and the importance of drinking water continually throughout their day.
