Anna, 16 anni
Anna is 16 years old and has seven siblings. Anna was born in Phnom Penh. Her family lives near Steung Meanchey where she and her mother used to work as garbage pickers, collecting cans and other trash to sell. Her father has now retired from being a village chief and suffers from a serious disease. As the family is very poor, they were not able to look after the health or schooling of the children. All money they earned as garbage pickers was spent on feeding all the members of the family for that day.
While Anna sometimes attended public school during this time, she missed many classes because she had to go out and work picking up garbage with her mother. She longed to study like other children, and one day she met Scott through her neighbors. Anna and her younger sister were both accepted to study at CCF and her mother now works selling cakes.
At CCF, Anna can learn English, Khmer, Make up, Sewing, and Computer. Make up and cosmetology is her favorite subject she was recently ranked third in her class following a test of Natural Make up 1.
She would like to run a small business such as a beauty clinic or hairdressing salon in the future.

Srey Chea, 14 anni
Srey Chea is 14 years old. She was born in Svay Reang Province, which is located in Cambodia near the Vietnamese border. She moved to Phnom Penh when she was 12 because at that time her parents could not grow any rice on the land. Without any means to support the family, they decided to travel Phnom Penh in search of jobs. Getting help from Srey Chea's aunt, they hired a small house near Stueng Meanchey and found work there as garbage pickers.
As the parents were out working every day, Srey Chea was responsible for looking after her three siblings. She did all housework and cooked rice and soup for the family. Some days she went to the dump with her mother to pick rubbish. At first she could only earn about 400 riel (US ten cents) a day selling items found in the garbage, but later was able to earn around 3,000 riel ($0.75) a day.
During this time, Srey Chea never attended school. One day, however, she met Scott while she was out picking up garbage and he asked her if she would like to study at CCF. The next day she and her mother went to apply, and Srey Chea became a CCF student. She returns home to her family in the evenings.
Here at CCF she can study English, Khmer, Computer, Sewing and cosmetology. She is doing very well and improving a great deal in her studies. In the future, when she graduates from CCF, she would like to be a beautician.

Srey Vy, 14 anni
Srey Vy came from Stoeung Meanchey, where she and her two sisters worked as garbage pickers. Her family moved there from an impoverished village in Takeo because they did not have any work to do to make money. So her parents decided to sell their house in Takeo and buy a small land at the garbage dump to build a house. They hoped they will make just enough to feed the family each day by picking garbage.
Like other children at Stoeung Meanchey, Srey Vy and her two sisters, Srey Mom and Reaksmey, became garbage pickers who worked from 6am until 5:30pm. They picked trash at the rubbish mountain just to earn 50c each. Their father got a job as a policeman earning $12 a month and her mother stayed at home looking after her new born baby.
Srey Vy came to CCF in November 2005 with her two sisters, Srey Mom and Reaksmey. They were found while working at the dump. She is enrolled in the general program at CCF1, studying English, computer, art, drama and music. She is also a 4th grade student at public school. While nervous and quite unsure at first, she is now happy, energetic, and lively. She is so grateful that she could come to CCF and have the chance to study.
