In addition to open discussions about Khmer history – including Cambodia’s period of genocide – Cultural Education & Heritage lessons are woven into our students’ performance art classes as part of CCF’s overall emphasis on preserving and exploring traditional and modern Khmer culture.

Classical Cambodian Ballet, or Apsara, is one of the country’s oldest and sacred art forms, dating back from between the 1st to 6th century. Folkloric dances consist of customary Khmer ritual dances usually performed only for specific celebrations during the year, while Popular dances can be performed at any time of the year and describe the daily activities and joys of Khmer farmers or fishermen.

Students also learn to play traditional Khmer songs with classical musical instruments - including wooden xylophones, gongs, cymbals and drums – and accompany our dance students in private and public performances.

Although CCF is a secular organization, we also provide optional weekly studies with a Buddhist monk for additional lessons in Buddhism and Khmer customs.
