In response to urgent need in and around the Steung Meanchey community, CCF developed a Maternal Care program to support expectant mothers during their pregnancy and through the first year of their baby’s life. Maternal Care works on a simple premise - a healthy baby requires a healthy mother. We provide pre-natal nutritional support and essential supplements, as well as access to clean, safe drinking water. We cover the costs of routine ultrasounds and confidential testing for bloodborne illnesses and, when applicable, give instruction on reducing transmission risk to their infants. We also offer expectant mothers additional counseling on topics ranging from uncooperative employers to high-risk domestic situations. When the baby is due, women in the program are encouraged to deliver at a modern medical clinic with trained medical staff. CCF covers the OB clinic fees, and provides a “Welcome Home Baby” kit and post-natal support with Community Center staff.
In order to participate in the program, expectant mothers are required to enroll in five education modules that cover pre- and post- natal nutrition, hygiene, breast-feeding and child development.
